2013 Read Atchison Promotes Improved Literacy Levels
Our local newspaper, the Atchison Globe, performs an essential and pivotal role in the community. According to market research done by USD 409, the Globe is the number one source of area-wide education news for subscribers of all ages. It keeps readers in touch with their neighbors and the community at-large. Additionally, the simple act of reading the newspaper improves the literacy levels within our families.
Now, through a new cooperative program called Read Atchison, the Globe will be delivered free to qualifying local families who may not currently have access to it. As parents enroll their children for the 2013-2014 school year, households that qualify for free or reduced lunches in USD 409 will have the opportunity to join the program.
In this pilot year, 400 newspaper subscriptions will be provided free by the Globe to qualifying families who elect to participate. The Atchison Rotary Club will cover the delivery costs of the newspaper, and USD 409 will enroll families in the program.
Read Atchison is one of the first new community programs being launched by the Live Well. Live Atchison. initiative that focuses on improving the lives of Atchison County residents. This particular project is designed to promote literacy, to strengthen the relationship between area families and our schools, and to enhance awareness of local events and issues.
For updates on this and future quality of life enhancement projects, persons are invited to follow Live Well. Live Atchison. on Facebook. Interested individuals also have access to expansive information related to services, resources, events, and beneficial tips associated with adopting and sustaining healthier lifestyles provided through the Live Well. Live Atchison. Web site, which is currently under development.
