Healthy Eating in Atchison

For many Atchison County residents, it’s difficult to regularly consume the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

The reason? For a lot of us, the answer is affordability and availability. For others, it’s lack of food knowledge. The key to healthy eating lies in having healthy options so that we can make healthy choices.

Live Well Live Atchison is working to educate the community on proper nutrition and make healthy food options more accessible through collaboration with:

  • Local food pantries
  • Grocery stores
  • Restaurants
  • Schools
  • Local food growers
  • Businesses

We want to develop systems that make fresh, healthy food more accessible to families.

To Nourish Is to Flourish

Healthy eating is so much more than dieting and losing weight. Eating a nutritious diet promotes overall health, prevents disease, and can help you:
  • Lose weight
  • Lower blood sugar
  • Fight obesity
  • Improve blood pressure
  • Lower cholesterol
A diet full of lean protein, whole grains, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables has even been proven to affect our ability to think clearly, make good decisions, and enjoy enough energy to live full, robust lives.

An Ounce of Prevention...

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated or intimidating. Small, simple changes can really add up and make a huge impact on your health.

  • Begin each day with breakfast.
  • Eat your meals sitting at a table, without distractions.
  • Eat when you’re hungry; stop when you’re comfortably full.
  • Cut down or eliminate fast food.
  • Give up second helpings.
  • Cook more meals at home.
  • Read food labels.
  • Drink lots of water.

Our goal is to increase overall food knowledge, as well as the consumption of and access to healthy foods.

Ask your server for a salad or fresh fruit in place of french fries.

Ask for half your meal to be put in a to-go container before your meal is brought to you.

Ask for salad dressings and sauces on the side. Dip your fork into these, rather than pouring them over salad or food.

Order sandwiches without cheese, bacon, and mayonnaise; instead, ask for extra lettuce, tomato, or onion for added flavor.

Skip complementary foods, such as bread and chips.
